Facts About Podiatric Medicine:

  • Podiatrists, after four years of premedical college courses, complete 4,000 hours of rigorous study at an accredited podiatric medical college, followed by a post-graduate training experience approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education of the American Podiatric Medical Association.
  • Podiatrists surgically perform soft tissue and bone procedures. The human foot has 26 bones, 33 joints and 107 ligaments. Podiatric physicians are trained to repair injuries and abnormalities involving any of them. In addition to treating fractured feet and ankles, they perform complex and delicate procedures utilizing state-of-the-art techniques, such as arthroscopy and endoscopic surgery.
  • Podiatrists prescribe a range of pharmaceuticals, including analgesics, antibiotics, antifungals, anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids and wart medications.
  • Podiatrists commonly refer patients to general practitioners, internists, orthopedic surgeons, vascular surgeons, endocrinologists and rheumatologists. DPMs often work with these specialists in developing overall treatment plans.
